How cool is Galaxy Quest?

I had been kind of putting of watching this, I suppose my expectations were that it wasn’t going to be funny. I was so wrong, this was great. If I had some friends around, this and Paul would make a great movie night combination.

Another cool thing is Sigourney Weaver who was also in Paul and Alien.

The movie itself took a stab at what it is like to be a sci fi nerd; experincing the conventions, the dress ups the characters you may come across. I thought it was great that it did have somewhat of a Star Trek feel to it, the command deck on the NSEA Protector looked very similar to that of the USS Enterprise.

Overall it is a comedy, if you like Star Trek or Sci fi in general you will like this.

Review: Grave Encounters

I like the found footage style of movie making, which this film is based on. Its about a horror based reality tv show the kind that only half believe in ghosts cause there never found solid evidence. The tv show is hosted by Lance and his team consist of a hot chick, a camera man and a tech guy and they Go to the abandoned Collingwood haunted psychiatric hospital, it is here there given a tour by the caretaker who shows the team were some of the paranormal phenomena happen, like a windows moves by on it own, a bathtub where a girl committed suicide and creepy writings on the wall. They voluntary lock themselves in for the night to try and investigate and capture the paranormal activity.

From here the hauntings begin, they keep to the recipe with the ghost scares kinda the same from the Paranormal Activity movies or Ghostfacers of the supernatural series. The horror unfolds somewhat closer to the end, the window does move, blood fills odd places, hands appear out of walls.

I’m always a fan of the ghost type stories, i think they build for better suspense and allow for better scares. I can appreciate this films shock value. It comes recommended.

The Woman

February 8, 2012 Leave a comment

This was twisted, a man (Sean Bridgers) captures and attempts to civilise the last remaining woman (Pollyanna McIntosh) from a decade old clan, (the feral flesh eating kind). The man that arrogant never realises that hes put his family in danger. The Woman is locked in an underground bunker beneath a barn, her arms and legs are chained, she is secured in a starfish kind of position.
From here the man tries to get his family on board to try and civilise her. His wife and daughter though are reluctant to get on board, and never quite do, his youngest daughter has a naïvety where she is still attempting to grasp the ideals of wrong and right. His son though I could begin to notice he is following in his footsteps. The family begins trying to bring her to civilisation, by bathing her, giving her normal clothes and feeding her with a spoon.

I suppose undertaking his project the man goes on a egocentric power trip, he begins to beat on his wife scare his daughters and brain wash then with his ideals. (By making them think what hes doing is ok) and even assault the woman which his son sees, copies and then is caught by his mother. unto which his father just thinks its apart of growing up.

That is were the feminist strengths shined through where it did focus on misogyny.

Onto the gore, it was out there, the woman as feral as she was loved biting fingers and faces off. For gore it does well.

You’re either gonna love it or hate it, I suppose horror fans should check it out, tick it of the list.

One of the reason I wanted to see this was for Angela Bettis who stared in May another twisted movie, I’m yet to write about.

Underworld: Awakening. In 3D.

February 8, 2012 Leave a comment

I went and seen this the other day in 3D, i must say bluntly that is was pretty awesome, Who doesn’t like Kate beckinsale in latex fighting 10 foot Werewolves. This is the fourth installment in the underworld franchise and here we see that the world has discovered the existence of vampires and lycans, and there is an army (Humans) trying to purge that existence, it is here that we see Selene and Michael captured and frozen in a research facility. 12 years passes and while frozen is known as Subject 1, she is freed by subject 2, and escapes, completly unaware of her surroundings, and not knowing the purge was somewhat successful. She starts having visions and investigates only to discover Eve (which was Subject 2). Now she must protect her from the facility that captured them both.

For a film that was recorded in 3D, i feel that it was underutilised, although, I really did get a kick out of the Selene and the Lycan fights in 3D, it was visually enthralling. Also Eve in lycan form was freaky. It was a success in the action department.

Some areas of the film that were plot driven, kinda took awhile to take off, or only half started.

I think to watch this film you’d want to be in the mood for some Selene buttkicking action.

This was awesome.

A girl institutionalized by her step father, uses a alternative reality in her mind as a result of a lobotomy and with this fantasizes about escaping with other girls also institutionalized.

The CGI used in this film made for a visually enthralling treat to the eyes and the mind.

Paranormal Activity 2

Here is the trailer for the upcoming sequal to Paranormal Activity. I remember when I saw the first one at the Cinema, a lot of people found it very frightening, it was very successful. The film only had small budget of $15,000, but pulled in over $100 million.
